CPF Presents at AmeriFace’s Family Conference

AmeriFace’s North American Craniofacial Family Conference was held July 24-27 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cleft Palate Foundation (CPF) Director of Family Services Sam Jennings, MSW and Foundation Administrator Emily Kiser represented CPF at the meeting.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Isabel Garcia, DDS, MPH presented on NIDCR and NIH’s relevant and current research on craniofacial treatment and care.  Adults and parents also attended sessions presented by ACPA members Cynthia Cassell and David Reisberg.

Various workshops were offered covering such topics as dealing with insurance coverage, dental management, and speech development.  Sam and Emily facilitated a focus group to discuss the unique needs of adults affected by craniofacial differences.

Sam presented a workshop on ‘Accepting the Gray of Adolescence’, that helped teens navigate life’s numerous demands and layered responsibilities and meet them with confidence and assurance.

In addition to the workshops, children and teens participated in a fun and active day camp where they learned sign language, participated in team building games, and were taught different origami techniques. Other activities included workshops addressing teasing, internet safety, and preparing for high school and beyond.

The tone for the week was set by the 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner. The night consisted of a delicious meal, music and entertainment by Mariah’s Sound Occasion, family portraits by Diane Witzel of Witzel Photography, and a sign language performance by children and teenagers attending the conference. The Celebration Dinner proved to be a great opportunity for families and individuals to come together, share stories and celebrate differences.

With nearly 200 attendees, the conference was a great success!  CPF would like to thank Debbie Oliver, our 2005 recipient of the CPF Leadership Award, for being a dedicated advocate for individuals and families affected by facial difference.
