EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

This symposium is designed for the orthodontist who wishes to supplement his/her knowledge and skills in treatment strategies for the overall management of patients with clefts and craniofacial anomalies.  The focus is on orthodontic treatment in the broad context of an interactive coordinated team approach to care, with the goal of encouraging community orthodontists to work with their local cleft/craniofacial teams.  Multidisciplinary team care requires an understanding of the unique orthodontic considerations and their relationship to speech, occlusion and facial aesthetics in this special group of patients.

The faculty of experts will present an overview of team care and specifically the role of the orthodontist in the timing and sequencing of treatment.  Emphasis on the coordination of orthodontic treatment will address issues which require interactive management and appreciation for the goals of infant orthopedics, alveolar bone grafting, and orthognathic surgery.  Additionally, attendees will be updated on current rationales in the delivery of orthodontic treatment within the context of the team approach as well as future directions.

This program will also be of benefit to health care providers from other disciplines who wish to learn more about cleft/craniofacial care from the orthodontist's perspective.
