Submission deadline: September 13, 2010 11:59:59 PM Central Time
The 2011 Program Committee of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association invites the submission of abstracts for the Association’s 68th annual meeting to be held in San Juan April 5-9, 2011.
Outcomes on the Island…is the theme of this year’s meeting. Outcome data – it’s what we rely on. We know how important it is to our work- the successful clinical management of children with craniofacial anomalies, the early and accurate diagnoses of these anomalies, and the translation of novel experimental protocols designed for prevention or treatment. And yet, we may not be making the most of these data. Or, with good intentions decide, “we’ll do outcomes mañana!”
During our meeting on La Isla del Encanto, The Island of Enchantment, we will let the Caribbean sun shine in and take a fresh, clear-eyed view of our work. So, ACPA – Show Us Your Outcomes!
The topic of this meeting will broadly focus on outcomes. Some areas of emphasis will include, but are not limited to:
How to collect data and analyze outcomes;
Surgical, speech, or psychological outcome data from a series of patients with orofacial clefts or craniofacial anomalies;
Outcome data from birth defects registries or genetic screenings;
Experimental and basic science outcome data from protocols designed to prevent or treat various orofacial clefts or craniofacial anomalies;
Clinical outcomes in multicultural or multi-institutional settings.
Abstracts focusing on these and any other aspects of outcomes are encouraged and will be given special consideration for the program. We also invite abstracts focusing on all other aspects of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies.
All original research that involves human subjects or animal studies should adhere to internationally accepted standards for the conduct of research. Human subject and animal research should be approved by a regionally appropriate oversight mechanism, such as an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Animal Care and Use Committee. (For more information, please see "Ethics and Research")
Authors should pay particular attention while writing their abstracts to ensure that they are clear, concise and data-based. Submission Deadline: Monday September 13, 2010 11:59:59 PM Central Time.
Submissions are encouraged in the following formats:
Platform papers --10 minutes
Posters
Panel Discussions -- 45 to 90 minutes
Show and Tell -- 4 minutes to present a special case, a clinical innovation, a new technique or a "pearl". Presenters will be limited to 10 PowerPoint screens.
Scientific or Clinical Exhibits
Study Sessions -- 90 minutes
Eye Openers -- 60 minutes
Nuts & Bolts -- 10 to 50 minutes. This pre-conference program, now in its tenth year, is held Tuesday afternoon prior to the Welcoming Reception. These presentations should focus on the daily grind of running a cleft and craniofacial team. Presentations should encourage discussion about the issues which team coordinators face on a daily basis. Important problems which should be emphasized are team and parent communication, initial patient contact, feeding a baby with a cleft, and long term management of the team patient. Panel presentations are also encouraged.
Paul W. Black Junior Investigator -- 10 minutes. There will be a special session for platform papers presented by Junior Investigators (Student Members or Active Members in their first year of practice). A plaque and monetary award towards travel to the 2012 Annual Meeting will be given to the presenter demonstrating excellence in quality, content (including clinical applicability of his/her work), and delivery. If the abstract is accepted, the Junior Investigator must submit a completed membership application prior to the meeting. These forms may be obtained from the ACPA National Office or on the website at www.acpa-cpf.org/membership.
Following each annual meeting the full text of each accepted abstract will be placed on the ACPA website.
By the submission of an abstract, the author certifies that s/he has written consent for use of any recognizable photographs in posters or presentations.
By the submission of an abstract, the authors and presenters, should the abstract be accepted for presentation, agree to either give permission to the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association to record and distribute electronic media and support material containing the presentation for educational purposes, or notify the ACPA National Office in writing that they do not wish to give this permission by February 1, 2011.
A 1 ½ day pre-conference symposium, “The Four Dimensions of Hemifacial Microsomia Care,” will be held Monday morning, April 4th – Tuesday afternoon, April 5th. The symposium will provide a comprehensive, updated assessment and review on the multi-disciplinary care of patients with hemifacial microsomia.
Ideas and suggestions regarding all facets of the program are welcome. We look forward to your participation in the 2011 Annual Meeting.
